Dennis McGavack, PGA Member
Dennis McGavack has been a member of the PGA since 1998 and has been teaching golf for 18 years. He recently returned to Mile Square after the closing of El Toro Golf Course where he spent five years as Head Golf Professional and Director of Instruction.
After 35 years playing the game, Dennis still competes in Southern California Senior PGA sectional events and has twice qualified to represent the Southern California Senior PGA in the North-South Matches held in Santa Maria.
When at El Toro, Dennis worked with the boy's and girl's golf teams from El Toro High School and is most proud of his junior students who went on to play for schools in the Orange County area. His experience includes working with students who have physical challenges; bad backs, hip and knee replacements, and those who have lost limbs.
Dennis explains his teaching style in this way: "I teach very eclectically. I think that you must if you want to do the best you can with every student, and you believe that not every golfer learns in the same way. I also use two different methodologies that are determined by the type of lesson I am giving. For instance, in giving what may be a "one-time lesson", determining cause and effect becomes vital. I've worked on identifying root causes for years. Way too many instructors just spot a problem and jump to fix it without determining why it is there in the first place. If I am working with a student on a more "long-term" basis, my first task is to establish a level of commitment that will insure that he/she can reach an established goal. Golfers must realize that becoming proficient at golf is like learning to play a musical instrument. One must learn to play the chords before the songs."
In other words, Dennis is always looking for students that are willing to make a time and effort commitment to their golf game and in return, he will gladly commit 100% of his effort to make them the best that they can possibly be.
